For the first time in history: more than 30,000 hectares under plastic

This is a figure that, in recent years, was rounded up by technicians, farmers and economists, well knowing that it had never been reached.

Agriculture remains the cornerstone of the Almería economy, a stable and very safe bet, that continues to capture investments and to grow, year after year.

An example of this is the fact, that an unprecedented milestone was reached in acreage of greenhouses, which for the first time in the 50 year history of the production system in Almeria, exceeded 30,000 hectares. This is a figure that, in recent years, was rounded up by technicians, farmers and economists, well knowing that it had never been reached.

However, at the end of 2015, according to data handled by the Government of Andalusia, the province of Almeria had a total of 30,230.08 hectares under plastic, compared to the 29,596.86 recorded at the end of 2014, representing an increase of 2.1%.

Regarding the municipalities with the largest greenhouse area, El Ejido leads the standings with 12,446 hectares, followed by the Níjar area, with 5,042 hectares, Almeria, with 2,270 hectares and Roquetas de Mar, with 2,023 hectares.
